A recent Telugu movie, Dhobi Ghat combines the hill-town charm of Hindi movies with the enthralling stories of Telugu plays. It is directed by Viswas M.S., a debut film-maker who has managed to create a meaningful, classic work that can be enjoyed by all audiences irrespective of language or culture. Given that it is being dubbed into Hindi for an Indian audience, these two languages are quite different. The film has a simple storyline about a NRI who returns to India with a lot of hopes in search of his fortunes. He tries in vain in Hyderabad, the IT capital of the country, and eventually he wanders through the streets of Bangalore looking for a job before giving up and going back to London where he is from. In the process he lives with a local family for some time, settles down there and falls in love with an Indian girl from this family. The film shows how this relationship ends up in trouble because of their different backgrounds, outlooks and realities. It mirrors what is common in many relationships where two individuals from different cultures come together and their aspirations clash or do not match at all with each other. The story is written with the same classical style as most of the old Telugu plays, and it has elements of humour too. The film has its share of falling in love stories with a twist, ranging from chaste to non-chaste. It also contains humorous incidents like how the hero's dog is blatantly misbehaving at people who don't even know that he (the hero) is using his place as home for them! He (the hero) is hesitant to reveal his real name before any one, because he fears they would find out his real identity and tell it to the girl's family! Most of the actors are newcomers whose roles are not very prominent but they all do justice to their roles. The lead pair of the film is new as well as fresh and very pretty. This makes it a very different film from any Hindi romantic comedy you see in the theaters these days. The only similarity to those comedies would be the usage of typical Indian things like chai, which is made over coal and not using any electric or gas heaters. The music and background music is also quite unusual; neither has a background music that we normally hear in most Hindi movies nor it has songs. The music is a blend of sonorous Indian instruments like the sitar, the sarod and tabla, but it is used alongside modern instruments like electric guitars. The cinematography is excellent and it has been shot in several Bangalore localities that are not very popular among Hindi movie makers at all. It also refers to a couple of very popular ones. There's a scene where the hero goes to a restaurant called Baba which one can go to in Bangalore where one can get delicacies from different parts of India. Another place mentioned in this story is Taj West End which used to be the most fashionable night club till date.
